EATONTOWN, NJ — This Thursday, the first medical marijuana dispensary in Monmouth and Ocean counties will open its doors, and it’s located in Eatontown.
The dispensary is called Garden State Dispensary and it will be located at 59 Rt. 35, near the entrance to the old Fort Monmouth property.
This is the first medical pot dispensary in Monmouth and Ocean counties. Last week, the all-Republican Ocean County Board of Freeholders unanimously voted against the upcoming Nov. 3 ballot question that asks New Jersey voters to legalize recreational marijuana.
There is growing interest in medical marijuana: Monmouth County has 7,341 people enrolled in its medical marijuana program, the fourth largest enrollment by county in the state. Across the state, there are currently more than 86,000 patients, 3,300 caregivers and 1,200 physicians enrolled in New Jersey’s medical marijuana program.
You cannot purchase medical marijuana in New Jersey without a prescription from a doctor.
Medical marijuana is not cheap: Prices at a medical marijuana dispensary in Secaucus (North Jersey) start at $60 for an eighth of an ounce of the drug, and most purchases cost $100 or $200.
When it opens Thursday, the Fort Monmouth medical marijuana shop will be the 12th facility dispensing marijuana for medical use in New Jersey.
The 11 other dispensaries include Greenleaf Compassion Center of Montclair, The Botanist (Compassionate Care Foundation) of Egg Harbor and Atlantic City, Garden State Dispensary of Woodbridge and Union Township, Breakwater Alternative Treatment Center of Cranbury, Curaleaf NJ, Inc. in Bellmawr, Harmony Dispensary in Secaucus, Rise in Paterson, Zen Leaf Elizabeth and Columbia Care in Vineland.
“Expanding access to our growing patient population continues to be a high priority especially during these unprecedented times,” said New Jersey Health Commissioner Judith Persichilli. “The opening of this site will provide residents in the Monmouth County area better access to products they need to treat their conditions.”
